A Letter To BYU President

BACK

The letter that appears below was sent to Dr. Cecil O. Samuelson, President of BYU, on behalf of one of the most valuable individuals currently sacrificing to expose the truth as to the events of September 11, 2001. I urge you to write, on behalf of Dr. Steven E. Jones, to encourage BYU to reconsider their decision to place Dr. Jones on leave and to allow him to teach his classes this semester. Dr. Jones, and all of the members of the Scholars for 911 Truth, at great risk to themselves and their careers, have vaulted to the frontlines of the 911 truth movement, and have given almost instant credibility to those of us who want our government to stop concealing the facts. The Scholars for 911 truth website is www.st911.org and, if you would like to write to Dr. Samuelson,  the link to the President's Page Email is http://unicomm.byu.edu/president/feedback.aspx

Please be polite when addressing Dr. Samuelson.

Dr. Samuelson,

I am writing to you in support of, not only Dr. Jones, but University faculty across this nation. I know that pressure has been applied to institutions of higher learning, including BYU, in an effort to force the termination of staff members who hold alternative views as to the events that occurred on September 11, 2001.

While I can understand that there are those who would like nothing more than to eradicate all voices of dissent, I find it troubling that a major University could, possibly, be coerced into succumbing to outside pressure to censor independent thought. While I am confident that educational integrity will not allow this to happen at BYU, the mere suggestion that it might, as reported in the media, is, in itself, cause for concern.

A person's ability to exercise free, rational thought is an essential tool of learning. Dr. Jones has not, to my knowledge, been accused of forcing any of his students to believe what his analysis of the evidence of the symmetrical collapse of the three buildings at the World Trade Center complex has led him to believe. I found his paper, "Why Indeed Did The WTC Buildings Completely Collapse?", articulate, and thought provoking.

One of the most troubling aspects of the attacks against our educators, by supporters of the Bush administration, and possibly by the administration itself, is that, if they succeed, one of the most effective tools of oppositional reasoning will be silenced. Rulers with no effective opposition turn into despots.

Without attempting to draw comparisons, I will only make the observation that one of the primary things Nazi Germany did, after Hitler consolidated all power, was to silence the educators. America is not a fascist dictatorship, but a Constitutional Republic.

I will not presume to lecture such a learned man as yourself, Dr. Samuelson, but would appeal to your reason, and ask that you reconsider BYU's decision to place Dr. Jones on a leave of absence.

Sincerely,

M. Adair
